Wardrobe Wednesday: outfits from Vegas

I hope everyone's holiday was fabulous.  Be on the lookout for a recap of my Christmas soon.

So I know I'm super late (like a month) at posting these.  But below are a few outfits pics I took before we were headed out while we were in Vegas during Thanksgiving.
We had a great time.  It was our first time going.  We stayed for 5 days, which was a little too long, IMO... We have to go back for a friend's wedding in June.  I think that will be a blast to go with a group of our high school friends!

3 Things Thursday: the hair edition

Here are some new hair products that I've been loving lately.  I used to use nothing but Redken products.  My mom used to be a hair stylist.  Although she hasn't done hair in about 10 years she continues to renew her cosmetology license.  So we're able to get salon hair products at the supply house for cost.   So I picked up these 4 new products one day, and I've been loving them all since.

source

1.   Redken Body Full shampoo and conditioner
This shampoo and conditioner gives great volume.  It is safe to use on color-treated hair.  Neither is too heavy.  It has a nice scent that's not too overpowering.  It works great on my fine hair.
source

2. Redken Guts 10
This gives great volume without being too heavy or sticky.  I apply it to wet hair by spraying it straight onto my roots in sections.  Then I massage it into the scalp and comb it through the rest of my hair.  Then I use this product on the ends:
source

3.  Redken Aerate 08
This stuff is awesome! The texture of it is so strange.  Its almost like a whipped paste.  You have to use such a tiny amount though.  It can give your hair a stiff feel with too much.  Here's what the description says:
The revolutionary aerated cream adds featherweight body with the moisturizing properties of a cream.

  • Conditioning agents provide silky softness and manageability.
  • The volumizing benefits of Cellulose plumps hair, giving It body and texture.
  • Helps block humidity for prolonged shape memory and refined style.

  • Here's my hair after blow-drying it and using these products.  Keep in mind I am not naked in the first pic.  I had on a bath wrap.  The second pic was after I actually fixed it.

All of these products work great with my fine hair.  This may sound gross but I only wash my hair twice a week.  I wash it on Mondays and Thursdays usually.  If I watch the amount of product I put in it I can go several days without washing it.  I use dry shampoo after the 2nd day.  I usually wear my bangs pulled back so I don't touch my hair a lot.  That helps it to not get greasy.  And I usually wear it up on the last day.

I'm finding the longer my hair is getting the harder it is to style.  I've been trying to grow my hair out for a long time now.  Although I love my hair short (below) I want long hair so bad.  While this may be a fantasy b/c I will never have the hair I dream of... I'm still trying!  Every night I take pre-natal vitamins and biotin (with my birth control haha).  I think it helps.

me (with short hair) and my niece a few years ago at her b-day party

I'm all about finding a good deal, but I'm pretty picky about the products I put in my hair.  It has ta tendency to turn brassy if I put certain products in it.  But that's not saying there aren't some good drugstore finds out there.  I don't know that I would use salon products if I didn't get them at the price I did.

What is your daily hair routine? Fave products?

a stocking with sour patch kids, a cute package of hot chocolate, an ELF makeup palette, OPI Christmas Mini set

My cute card with removable ornament (its on my tree now), and yes that is a pic of Mocha with Santa

    Wardrobe Wednesday: OOTD

Today's outfit is a pretty basic work outfit- nothing fancy.  Pretty boring... It got pretty cold here overnight.

    pants- Loft
    sweater- JCP
    wedges- Target
    scarf- American Eagle

I picked up this scarf over the weekend with an American Eagle coupon, and I couldn't wait to wear it.  I have no makeup on today.  My eyelid has been itching all week in one spot, and I just couldn't bare to put any eye makeup on just to rub it off.
With that being said... This leads me into a discussion about the random "health" issues I've been having for the past month.
I've got this weird red patch on my left eyelid.  And it itches like crazy.  I haven't changed my makeup or any facial products recently.  So I have no clue what it is.  My vision insurance kicks in January 1st so I'm going to have my eyes checked then.
Both of my eyes have been twitching for over a month.  Not continuously.  But on and off and nearly every day.  Just recently my entire right eyelid has been twitching every few times I blink.  People can even see it when they look close enough.  I have no idea what is causing it.
I have also been having crazy muscle spasms everywhere lately.  Sometimes when I lay down at night my temple will spasm while I'm laying on it.  I get spasms in muscles in my legs, arms, back, etc... I've never had them this much this often.  So at this point I've convinced myself that I have some neurological problem and I need to go to the doctor asap.  Husband thinks I'm over-reacting...
Anyone else ever had this happen?!

Book Review & My New Lifestyle

So instead of a recipe on this "Tasty Tuesday" I'm going to talk a little bit about a new life decision I made recently regarding my eating habits.

Has everyone heard of this book?
    source
The book was published in 2005 and written by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin.  The title will definitely fool you.  From the title and the cover I think that it's about changing the way we eat and the way we view food in general.  I thought it would be similar to Bethenny's Naturally Thin, which I loved.  Wrong!  It is a very sharp, to-the-point, no-nonsense book about veganism and avoiding processed foods.

I heard about the book a few years ago, but I never read it.  After reading Raven's post I decided to check it out from my local library.  I started and finished the entire book within a 24 hour period.  I was so intrigued by the information in it.

    {Just to back up a little... I've always been health-conscious.  I used to be very active so I never watched what I ate.  It wasn't until starting college and a sedentary "desk" job that I realized how important eating right was.  I also used to work at a medical weight loss clinic where I taught a nutrition course.  I was a nutrutional counselor, and our program was calorie counting.  I've been a big advocate for counting calories since then because it works.  And it's scientifically proven.  I know the importance of eating a well balance diet.  I mostly cook from scratch, and we do not eat or buy a lot of processed foods.  About 6 months ago I started buying only free range organic chicken.  Ok so that's where I was before I read the book.}

Anyway... The book had a lot of eye-opening info in it.  If you are easily offended by the f-word or any curse words this book is definitely not for you.  Considering I sometimes have a bad mouth myself... It didn't bother me!
There are sections on animal cruelty, factory farming, the processing of meat and other foods.  I was actually in the process of doing the 17 Day Diet  when I first started reading this. One night I had to make a chicken and vegetable soup.  I was sitting on the couch trying to eat the soup when I got totally grossed out by the thought of the chicken.  I threw the soup away and haven't eaten meat since.  That was the 16th of November.  I did have about 3-5 bites of turkey on Thanksgiving.  But that is it.

I have no plan of going completely vegan.  I just feel like it might be too difficult and a little to expensive for me.  I don't think I could totally cut out cheese and every single animal processed food.  Eggs are also one of my favorite breakfast foods.  Even though it took me until last week to be able to stomach eggs again.
    source

One of the other big parts that got me was a section on diet cokes.  I've always known the aspartame was really bad.  My mom has always gotten onto me about diet cokes because of it.  But I never paid attention to it.  My husband and I both are huge diet coke drinkers.  It wasn't until seeing it all in writing that it clicked.  I  haven't had more than a few sips of diet coke since reading the book almost a month ago.  I have had a few regular cokes here and there.  But the scariest thing was reading all of the possible side effects of aspartame.

So far making this transition into vegetarianism has been easy.  I was never a huge meat eater.  I would much rather eat carbs anyway.  The first week I lost about 4 lbs.  But that's not the reason I am doing this.  I managed to sustain the entire time in Vegas without eating meat except for the few bites of turkey on Thanksgiving.  The hardest part is going out to dinner though.  But in Vegas most places had vegetarian options.  I had a vegetarian hot dog with all kinds of good toppings at Pink's.  Johnny Rockettes had a soy burger that you could substitute any burger for.  So some restaurants are jumping on the bandwagon.
    source

I have still been eating seafood though.  I've always liked the products by Boca and Morningstar way before this.  So that has made the transition easier.  Here's an example of some things I've been cooking that the husband can eat too.
Red beans with sausage in the crock pot- I just don't eat the sausage
Vegetable stir-fry with quinoa or rice
Spaghetti- husband will put meatballs in his
If he eats a pork chop or chicken I will make a Boca burger or boca chicken patty
    veggie wraps
    salads

I have not tried to push this lifestyle on anyone, not even husband.  But he's been so supportive of it.  I feel really good about my decision.  And I just feel better in general.  So what do you think?  Is this something you would every consider? Have you read the book or anything like it?
    Sorry this is so long-winded!

Three Things Thursday: Fave Christmas Movies

For this edition of 3 Things Thursday I decided to share my 3 favorite Christmas movies with you guys!

    1. Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas
    source
Who doesn't love Dr. Seuss?! I LOVE this movie.  It's cute, funny, and very entertaining!  I've seen it a ton of times, and can recite most of the movie!

    2.  Prancer
    source
This is just a good classic movie!  I used to watch it as a kid every year.

    3.  Elf

I love Will Ferrell and most of the movies he plays in. So naturally Elf is one of my faves!

What are your favorite holiday movies?

I'M BACK + MY CHRISTMAS WISHLIST

So I'm officially back in the blogging game.  These past few weeks have been so hectic.  Husband and I went to Vegas all last week.  We had a great time.  But I'll be honest... We were exhausted and ready to come back home by the end of the trip.  Once I get some free time I'll post some outfits pictures from the trip.
We booked and paid for the trip 6 months ago. At that time I had no idea I would be leaving right smack in the middle of my biggest work project of the year, health insurance open enrollment.  Normally, we do it in May.  But we've changed things up this year so we're in a huge time crunch to get it all under  way before the first of next year.  So it's been a little stressful returning to work.
I've been noticing everyone posting their Christmas wish lists so I wanted to show you guys mine!  This year I'm only asking for a 2 bigger items.
    from Target.com
Vanity Set: I really want to re-do our guest bedroom as a "vanity" room for me.  I want to put a vanity with some storage bins and shelves.  I was inspired by this Pink Lou Lou post.  I will use that room to put my makeup on and do my hair.  Husband leaves for work way later than me so putting it in our bedroom is not really an option because he's still asleep.  Right now I don't have much space in our bathroom, and since he's still asleep I usually blow-dry my hair in the guest bathroom anyway.  We NEVER have company so that won't be an issue.  I just have to find the right furniture to go in there, and figure out a way to rearrange everything to fit.

Professional hair dryer:  This one runs $194 which seems a little crazy for me.  But I think with my flat hair it would make a difference.  I just have to research the best one.

I'm sure I'll think of more.  What all are you wishing for this year?

Tasty Tuesday: Black Eyed Peas & Ham

Today I'm just going to share a link to one of my favorite crock pot recipes.  Black Eye Peas are a Southern staple.  I love them, especially with sausage or ham.  Its also no secret that I love my crock pot, and  Gina's skinny recipes.  I have yet to make something that disappoints from that site!

So here's the link!  Everyone go make these! They are delish!  I make them pretty regularly.

    Wardrobe Wednesday: OOTD

    Happy Wednesday!
Today I'm wearing what's as close to PJ's to work as possible.  I think I may have injured my knee in the gym yesterday, doing lunges.  Something popped, but it didn't hurt.  So I finished my entire routine.  Then later in the day it kept popping and feels like something is pulling whenever I straighten it.  I've been wearing flats for 2 days, and I have to take the elevator in my building.  I'm so mad because I feel like I just found my groove.  I had a good routine down that I really liked.  Now this happens!!!  Hopefully it's nothing serious.  But its still bothering me this morning.

Anyway, I'm wearing my Daisy Fuentes skinnies that I posted about in my recent purchases post Monday.

    Shirt- Gap $12
Skinnes- Daisy Fuentes via Kohl's $23
shoes- Steve Madden via Plato's Closet $9.99
These pants feel like a really thick legging.  They have an elastic waist.  So you just pull them on.  But they're not tight like leggings.  They are looser like a regular pant, and they have pockets in the back so it looks like pants.  I probably wouldn't wear them with anything other than a looser shirt though.
I picked up this shirt of the clearance rack at Gap a while back.  This is my first time wearing it.  I really like the back of it!!

    Mixed Up Monday: Recent Purchases

Happy Halloween!  I'm lazy and boring and didn't do anything for Halloween nor am I dressing up.  Husband has too much studying to do to break away.  And I just hate to spend money on a costume, and I'm too lazy to make one.
Saturday I had a facial from my best friend.  She's an Esthetician, and owns a spa in our hometown.  My skin has been looking so dull lately no matter how many times I exfoliate.  Plus, it has been a year since I had one.
Then afterward I tagged along with a friend while she shopped and we ate sushi for lunch.  We spent 6 hours shopping!  It was so fun though.  By the time I came home at 7 that night I was exhausted.
I did pick up a few things on Saturday.  I really wanted to take advantage of the 20% off coupon from Ulta since there were no exclusions.  There were some things I knew I would buy eventually.  So why not stock up when you can get it on sale?  I also went to Loft because they were having a 40% off everything sale.
So here's what I picked up:
    LOFT: 40% OFF ENTIRE STORE
    weekend shopping

ULTA: USED 20% OFF ENTIRE ORDER COUPON
A lot of these items were things I wouldn't normally buy all at once being the frugal person that I am.  But they were all things I've had on my wish list for a long time.  And since the Ulta coupon was a one-time thing, and you can normally not use their coupons on any of this stuff... I figured this was the best time to buy everything- while I can get it cheaper.  I can either buy things later when I need them or buy things before I need them at a discount.  I follow the same rule for my groceries and household products... "Buy at the lowest price possible if you are going to use it."
    ulta shopping

I've been needing and wanting a new skin care set lately.  Normally I use a drugstore brand, usually Olay because I always have coupons.  But some of the drugstore brands can be pretty pricey when you add up an entire line of products.  Since I really needed everything I figured I'd give this kit a try, and I added in the microdermabrasion cleanser also .  I wouldn't have normally bought it or paid full price for it.  I really just tried it because of the coupon.  But I've been using it since Saturday night and I love it.  But I also just had a facial so we'll see how long that lasts.

I've been dying to try this for a while.  I tried ELF's version, the shimmering facial whip in lilac petal.  But I really didn't care for the consistency of it.  It was EXTREMELY runny.  I made a mess every time I used it.  Since ELF's is only $1 I bought 2 different bottles of it.  Because I thought maybe the first one I bought was old.  But they both did it.  I think that's the first ELF product I didn't really like!

This stuff is AH-Mazing!  I've been on a crazy mascara kick lately.  My sister actually bought this stuff and I tried it.  I had to have it.  I was going to wait until I ran out of ELF Mineral Infused Mascara to buy some more.  But I figured I could either buy it in a month or two or buy it now for 20% less.

I already have one of these and I'm completely obsessed.  But I picked this one up for my mom.  She tried mine a few weeks ago and fell in love.  Is there anyone out there that doesn't like this thing?!

    KOHL'S
I've been dying for some skinny black pants that I can wear to work.  I have black jeans, but I can't wear jeans.  And I'm funny about leggings so I won't wear leggings to work.  I found these at Kohl's.  They are the material of sleeping pants.  But they aren't too tight and have pockets in the back.  So they look like regular pants.  They are great quality.  These were originally $48.  But the Daisy Fuentes brand was 40% off and I had a 15% off coupon I printed.  So I think I paid about $26 with tax.

    FRUGAL FRIDAY: CHEAP DATE NIGHT

    Happy Friday everyone!
So since this week was our anniversary I thought it would be fun to share some quick tips for cheap date nights.  I'm really easy to please when it comes to going out to dinner or a date night.  I don't like expensive restaurants because it's not worth it to me, and I'm 100% ok with pizza and beer for a date night!
So here's my tips for cheap dates:
    1. Sign up for restaurants' email lists.
      1. I put this #1 because it is the best tip I have.  For our anniversary we got a coupon for a free dinner at Texas de Brazil (at $50 value), a free pizza at Rotolos, a free appetizer at Lone Star Steakhouse, free chocolate covered strawberries at The Melting Pot, and a few other offers.  A lot of restaurants will send you an initial offer and something on your b-day and/or anniversary.  Use these coupons!  We are saving the Texas de Brazil because it's good until November.  But last Saturday night we went to Rotolos, ordered a pizza, drank and hung out for a few hours for $15!!!
    2. Sign up for daily deals sites
      1. They always have great offers for things to do in every area.  I always buy the Fandango tickets when they are like $12 for 2.  If you go to the movies it is $18.  So that is a $6 savings.  I keep the codes in my email.  Then when we have nothing to do I check out the movie times and use one of my codes for Fandango I already bought!
      2. My top sites are: google offers, groupon, daily deals, screamin' daily deals, & living social
    3. Use restaurants.com
      1. You can do a search for restaurants in your area and buy $25 gift certificates for $2!!!!
      2. Read the fine print and make sure there are no restrictions.
    4. Hip2Save.com does a Weekend Restaurant Round-up every Friday to let everyone know of the deals at restaurants for the weekend.
      1. She also does a weekend retail round-up for shopping
    5. Go to a restaurant a little early for happy hour to get cheap drinks and appetizers
    6. Check out local wineries and breweries.
      1. Sometimes they give free tours and samples
    7. Cook at home together
      1. I put this last because I cook during the week everyday so it's not my ideal thing to do for a fun night.  Plus, my kitchen is small so it's hard for us to do this.  But other people may enjoy this!
If you start signing up for all these email lists I would create a separate email account for them to go to.  This way it isn't clogging up your inbox.  Check it a few times a week or every other day.

And just for fun here are a few of my favorite pics from my wedding- since it is my anniversary week!!!  I had the easiest best experience planning my wedding.  We had a small wedding, and it was SO SO fun!
Our venue. I love this! It's my background on my computer
     me & my youngest niece
    me & my dad
clearly this isn't the most flattering picture but i love how happy i am!
    ha!
    me & my mom
    me & my parents
me & my bridesmaids my sister is farthest to the right!
my big sis in my sorority sang while we lit the unity candle
my dad & i dancing to Hank Williams, Family Tradition!

Sorry about all the images! I just kept adding!!!! Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!
